Ibis Laurel, Children's Choir Director

Born in Mexico, Ibis Laurel has led a diverse career as choral and orchestra conductor, music professor and even an English/Spanish interpreter. Ibis currently serves as the Founder and Conductor of Chimæra Ensemble, a chamber orchestra born and based in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico since 2024; the ensemble focuses primarily in the dissemination of Latin American orchestral repertoire.

Ibis Laurel was a recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship for Foreign Studies that allowed her to pursue a masters degree in Choral Conducting at SDSU, completed in 2015. After graduating, Ibis went back to Mexico where she conducted choirs (children to adults) and taught music at the university level. In 2019 she was granted a federal award to record the album debut of Camerata XXXI, an early music ensemble specialized in colonial music from the Americas. Ibis Laurel founded the Camerata XXXI as a way to express her passion for Early Colonial Music.
