José Medina,
Artistic Director, Opera de Tijuana
Mexican stage director José Medina was born in Tijuana into a musical family. He studied piano, singing, acting and interpretation in México, EUA and Italy. Mr. Medina has worked with artists such as Peter Lindo, Juan Ibañez, Joan Sutherland, Alfredo Kraus, Gustav Kuhn, Frübeck de Burgos, Richard Bonynge among many others in theaters around the world.
His credits as stage director are Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia; Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore; Puccini’s La Bohème, Madama Butterfly, Tosca; Verdi’s Nabucco and Aida; Bizet’s Carmen; Leoncavallo’s
I Pagliacci; Mascagni’s Cavallería Rusticana and Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, for Opera de Tijuana and Festival Opera en la Calle, Festival de Sinaloa and Festival Ortiz Tirado in Alamos, Sonora; Teatro Angela Peralta de Mazatlán, theaters in several states of Mexico highlighting I Pagliacci’s performance at the Zocalo in Mexico City.

He has directed for the Teatro Nacional de San José de Costa Rica, South Florida Opera, and he is a frequent guest director for Civitanova All’Opera Festival in Italy.

Other chamber opera works include Pergolesi’s La Serva Padrona, Santini e Cardini, Barber’s The hand of bridge as well as Rossini's L'Occasione fa il ladro. Medina is Co-Founder and Artistic director of Opera de Tijuana since 2000 where he has also created the Ensamble Lirico Juvenil, a youth group of prominent voices.
